Custom-Installed Vs. Portable Radar And Laser Detectors
One of the most common questions we get about radar detectors is, “Why do I want a custom-installed system when I can buy a portable unit, stick it on my dash and be good to go?” That is a great question. Here’s our answer: What a portable system brings to the table is its portability, and that is about the end of it. A custom-installed system combines the finest radar sensors available for the longest range, and they use laser shifters, not sensors.
Radar Detection
When you are driving up the road and experience radar, chances are your detector is picking up someone in front of you getting shot with it, giving you an opportunity to slow down and avoid a ticket. The radar receivers in our custom-installed systems are much larger than in a portable model and can give you increased notice of a threat, thus more time to respond.
Laser Detection
With laser, everything is different. Your vehicle is now being shot with a beam of light that is approximately 3 feet in diameter at 300 yards. Your portable laser detector won’t pick up that light beam since it is not directed at your vehicle. When you are driving along and get shot with laser, all a portable unit is good for is alerting you to the fact that you are going to get a ticket. Custom-installed systems work completely differently. When they are shot with laser, the sensors immediately fire back powerful beams of light that the laser gun doesn’t understand so it can’t get a reading on you. Now you have time to slow down and avoid a ticket.
As more and more authorities are using laser for their accuracy and winning percentage in court, having laser shifters is almost a necessity.
Our Systems Look Factory Installed
Just like the name implies, a custom-installed laser and radar detector from Ralph’s Radio is permanently installed in your vehicle. A system designed and installed by us will look like the vehicle manufacturer offered it as a factory option. As mentioned earlier, a laser shifter fires back beams of light at the laser gun. For it to work properly, the sensor has to be securely mounted, parallel with the road and aimed perfectly ahead. Any deviation in this will dramatically reduce the performance and, in our opinion, become a waste of your time and resources.
When it comes to the products that get installed inside your vehicle, such as the display and controller, our fabricators will make templates and use materials to make them blend in perfectly. We even offer an option to place the display in your rearview mirror, putting it in your direct line of sight.
