How Lidar Works
Law enforcement agencies always want the latest technologies to assist them in their jobs. The use of Lidar systems for traffic enforcement has increased steadily since 2000; with Lidar’s speed and precision, it’s quickly replacing radar.
A police officer measures your speed by pointing a hand-held gun directly at your vehicle. The gun transmits a series of light pulses at the vehicle. Your speed is determined by calculating the change in time that it takes for the pulses to be reflected back to the gun. The measurement process takes less than half a second. Lidar guns offer accuracy within a few km/h and can work up to 900 meters away. Another benefit of laser speed detection is the ability to focus on a single vehicle – the light beam is less than a meter wide at a distance of 300 meters.
The Escort ZR5 Laser Defense System
Unlike a laser detector that warns you when Lidar has been used, the stand-alone ZR5 system will prevent police from taking a speed reading of your vehicle. When the system detects a laser signal, it transmits back a distorted message until you slow down and cancel the transmission. The system includes a pair of ShifterMax laser sensors, a compact control module and a system controller with an integrated warning speaker.
