One of the questions that comes up frequently with our clients here at Ralph’s Radio in Victoria and Vancouver is about 1-Way vs 2-Way remote car starter system technology. The latest remote starters offer many solutions in terms of range and communication. Let’s look at the three most popular options.
One-Way Remote Controls
The classic and conventional remote start control system is the one-way remote control. These solutions transmit commands from the remote to the vehicle using AM or FM transmission technology – the same as local radio stations. The systems include a security code and the requested command in each transmission. All of the information needs to be received clearly by the control module in the vehicle for the command to be executed. Range options for one-way remote controls vary between 800 and 3,000 feet and are available in one- and four-button configurations.
2-Way Remote Car Starter Controls
Stepping up to a two-way remote adds a receiver to the remote. Function requests are transmitted to the vehicle using the same technologies as a one-way remote. When the remote starter system has received the request and completed the task, it transmits a signal back to the remote for verification. The remote displays this confirmation by flashing an LED or displaying an icon on the LCD screen. Most remotes also include a beeper that will produce a sound when the confirmation has been received. Range options extend all the way to 3 miles for two-way systems.
For one-button remotes, remote start and door unlock functions are confirmed. For four-button and LCD remotes, locking, unlocking, remote start, trunk release and auxiliary output functions include confirmation. If we have added security features to your remote starter, notifications from the DAS shock/motion/tilt sensor will be displayed on the LCD remotes.
Smartphone Control Solutions
For those looking for the longest possible range, the Compustar DroneMobile system is the answer. DroneMobile uses an app on your iPhone or Android-based smartphone to send signals to a module in your vehicle using cellular radio communication. Locking, unlocking, remote start and auxiliary control function are available using the DroneMobile app. As long as you and your vehicle are in a location with cellular data coverage, you have complete control over the system. You could be in your apartment, your office, or on the beach in Cancun – DroneMobile works everywhere.
Clients opting for the DroneMobile Premium Service Plan have the ability to locate their vehicle on a map using a GPS receiver integrated into the vehicle module. Location-based alerts can be configured to let you know if the vehicle enters or leaves a specific area.
