Apple CarPlay cellular phone connectivity solutions from Ralph’s Radio in Vancouver and Victoria make commuting safer and more efficient. CarPlay uses the artificial intelligence built into Siri to convert simple voice commands into commonly used functions on your phone. If you want to make a phone call, change the song you’re listening to or get directions to a new restaurant, CarPlay can help.
How Does Apple CarPlay Work?
If you’re sitting on the couch at home, typing on your phone is quick and intuitive. When you’re behind the wheel in your car, truck or SUV, British Columbia’s distracted driving law prevents you from touching your phone. In 2014, Apple launched a product called CarPlay that uses the Siri voice assistant to convert verbal requests into commands on your phone. If you’re jonesing for a double-double but aren’t sure what time Timmies closes, say, “Call the closest Tim Hortons.” Siri will search the internet using your precise location to find the store nearest to you. You can find a gas station, hotel, restaurant or even a hospital the same way.
If you want to send someone a text message, CarPlay will let you dictate what you want to say, and it will convert it to text. The system reads the message back to you before sending it. You can also ask Siri to read new incoming messages, all without taking your eyes off the road.
Reach Your Destination Efficiently
With conventional GPS-based navigation systems, you had to enter the destination before you started driving. With CarPlay, you can say the address or let Siri look it up for you based on a business name. If you’re from out of town, say, “Take me to Granville Island,” and you’ll be on your way to a day of adventure. Siri can even help you find a parking lot once you arrive.
CarPlay uses Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze to provide detailed, turn-by-turn navigation directions. All three applications use real-time traffic flow information in major urban areas to plot the most efficient route. Best of all, the map data is always up to date and as accurate as possible.
Stay Entertained While Driving
Siri and CarPlay make it easy to pick the music you want. You can ask to hear a specific artist or genre of music stored on your iPhone, or use a streaming service like Amazon Music, Spotify or Tidal to listen while you drive. Audiobook and podcast playback are also compatible with CarPlay.
