A client from Vancouver contacted Ralph’s Radio to inquire about upgrading his 2019 Honda Civic Type R with a new audio system, a dashcam and a radar detector. After a quick inspection of the vehicle and a discussion about his feature and performance expectations for each solution, we assembled a custom technology package for the client.
Honda Civic Type R Stereo Upgrade
Because Honda has integrated so much into the factory-installed infotainment solution, it can’t be removed from the vehicle. This isn’t a challenge for the team at Ralph’s. We used a Mosconi D2 100.4 DSP amplifier to extract an audio signal from the factory radio and power a set of Focal ES 165 KX2 6.5-inch speakers. We treated the doors to a layer of SoundMat deadening material before installing the woofers from the Focal set. We added a set of acoustic coupling rings once the speakers were in place to ensure all the output is focused into the vehicle interior.
We created a custom mounting ring for an Audison APS-8D subwoofer and affixed it to the factory-installed subwoofer enclosure. The new woofer can handle a lot more power than the original driver, and thus, play a lot louder. We mounted a compact Rockford Fosgate T400X2ad amp with the Mosconi to power the subwoofer with up to 400 watts.
The digital signal processor in the Mosconi amp is configured to power the front speakers in an active configuration, and the output feeds bass information to the subwoofer amp.
Thinkware Dashcam
The client asked us to install a premium dashcam to ensure that everything around the vehicle would be recorded. We mounted the main camera of a Thinkware F800Pro-2ch on the windshield, with the rear camera in the back window. All the wiring is concealed for a neat and tidy appearance.
Escort Radar Detector
The last piece of the project was to integrate an Escort ZW5 laser shifter system into the vehicle. The client wanted a way to use his portable Escort radar detector in all of his vehicles, but have the confidence of knowing he’d be protected against police lidar speed traps. We mounted the pair of ShifterMax laser transceivers in the upper grille and installed the control module in the center console.
Vancouver’s Vehicle Enhancement Experts
Once the stereo system, dashcam and laser defense system were installed and configured, we let the client know he could return to Ralph’s Radio and pick up his Civic. We showed him how to control each of the upgrades, and he was thrilled with the results.
