A client from Vancouver recently contacted Ralph’s Radio to discuss upgrading his 2007 Lamborghini Murcielago audio system. We’ve built several audio system upgrades for this client in the past, including a Lamborghini Aventador. The client wanted a sound system that offered amazing detail and clarity, realistic imaging and great bass response. After inspecting the vehicle and talking to the client about his listening preferences, we made a proposal that would provide the technology and performance he wanted.
Kenwood Source Unit Upgrade
The first upgrade for this 2007 Lamborghini Murcielago Versace edition was to replace the factory radio with a Kenwood DDX9904S multimedia receiver. The new radio not only sounds better than the unit it replaced but adds support for high-resolution digital media file formats like FLAC. The DDX9904S also includes both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. These smartphone connectivity solutions use the voice recognition system built into these phones to perform functions like music selection or text messages using voice commands.
Because the view out the rear window of the Murcielago is as bad as most Lamborghini vehicles, we added a Rydeen backup camera above the rear license plate. As soon as the transmission is in reverse, the camera image appears on the screen of the Kenwood radio.
Murcielago Audio System Amplifiers
The output of the Kenwood radio feeds a pair of Mosconi D2-Series amplifiers through Audison Connection interconnect cables. A four-channel D2-100.4-DSP drives the midrange drivers in the doors and the tweeters installed in the A-pillars. A matching D2-500.1 powers the 10-inch subwoofer mounted behind the passenger seat.
Thanks to the compact 5.9-by-5.5-inch footprint of the D2-series amps, we were able to locate the amplifiers under the dash of the Lamborghini at the front of the center console. This location keeps them out of harm’s way while still providing easy access through the passenger footwell area for tuning.
Morel and Focal Speaker Upgrades
The front stage of the Lamborghini audio system is a Morel 38th Anniversary Limited Edition two-way speaker system. This is one of the best speaker systems available in the industry and uses technologies like one-piece carbon cones, titanium voice coil formers and neodymium magnets on the woofers for amazing clarity and detail.
The 6.5-inch woofers from the set are mounted in the factory speaker location in the doors. We treated the doors with Cascade Audio CAE-VB-2SP damping material and added a set of SoundSkins Rings behind the speaker to help prevent rattles or vibrations.
Our fabrication team molded the large 1.1-inch tweeters into the base of the A-pillar trim panels. The modified pillars are wrapped in vinyl that matches the doors and dash of this unique Lamborghini.
For sub-bass, we turned to the Focal SUB-P-25F shallow-mount woofer. We created a custom enclosure for this 10-inch sub that fits against the firewall of the vehicle behind the passenger seat. The enclosure is finished in the same vinyl as the A-pillars to match the interior of the vehicle.
Murcielago Versace Audio System Tuning
With all of the equipment installed for this Murcielago audio system upgrade, the last step was to tune the system using the six-channel digital signal processor built into the four-channel Mosconi amplifier. We set up our real-time analyzer and microphone, then set to work balancing the output of each speaker in the car to create a lifelike listening experience. The signal processor includes signal delay capabilities that allow us to adjust the output of each speaker so that sound arrives at the listening position simultaneously. The result is a realistic soundstage across the dash of the vehicle that mimics the best home audio and studio reference sound systems available.
Exotic Car Audio by Ralph’s Radio
After five days of work and with the system tuned, it was time for the owner of this 2007 Lamborghini Murcielago Versace Edition to return to Ralph’s Radio in Vancouver to pick up his vehicle. He loves the way the new audio system sounds and is excited to use the new features of the Kenwood radio.
