A client from Vancouver recently visited Ralph’s Radio to inquire about adding a radar detector and laser defense system to his 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. With 650 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft. of torque on tap, it doesn’t take long for this beast to exceed any posted speed limit in the country. After talking to the client about where he drives, we designed a speeding ticket prevention solution that would deliver the warnings he wanted to help him arrive at his destinations without delay.
Escort MAX Ci 360 Radar Detector
The project was based on an Escort MAX Ci radar detector and laser defense system. This custom-installed solution features dedicated front and rear radar receivers to provide maximum coverage in both urban and rural areas. Because radar signals will pass through plastics with almost no level attenuation, we were able to hide the radar antennae behind the front and rear bumper covers for a clean and tidy installation.
Corvette Laser Defense Solution
The second part of the project was to install the Escort ShifterMax laser transceivers on the front and rear of the vehicle. These compact units detect signals from a police lidar gun and transmit a scrambled message that is similar to their light beam. This signal prevents the guns from taking a speed measurement. The client can check that he is traveling at a safe speed, then cancel that transmission. This process is called Jam to Kill and, when executed smoothly, will prevent any harassment from the law enforcement officer.
As you can see from the photos, we installed the sensors so that the output is parallel to the centerline of the vehicle. This and several other criteria are crucial to the proper operation of the system. Failure to comply with these strict guidelines will result in a system that can’t deliver what it promises and can lead to speeding tickets.
Vancouver’s Vehicle Enhancement Specialists
We mounted the control panel for the system to the right of the steering column, just under the Engine Start button so it was easy to access. For the display, we removed the top of the steering column and created a custom mounting pod from several layers of cast acrylic plastic. The layers are stacked, then bonded to the cover before being painted.
After a few days of work, we had this Corvette radar and laser defense system installation complete. The client returned to Ralph’s Radio to pick up the vehicle and get his walk-through on how to use the system. He was thrilled with the results!
